The Steps for Lectio Divina

Lectio divina can be done in a group, such as YES, or alone. The following steps are for those wishing to use lectio divina alone, although the process for a group is not much different.

  1. Lectio (lec-tsee-oh) "Reading"
Read the Scripture passage silently and/or aloud several times. Let the words sink in deeply. Open your mind and heart to the meanings of the words.
  2. Meditatio (med-ee-tots-ee-oh) "Meditation"
Reflect on the passage. Think deep thoughts and ask yourself the following questions:
    • What does this passage say to me?
    • Who am I in this passage?
    • What do I see? What do I hear?
    • What do I think?
    • Which character do I most relate to?
    • Wat do I most need to learn from this passage?
Try taking notes or journaling on your thoughts.
  3. Oratio (oh-rot-see-oh) "Prayer"
Move deeper into prayer. Consider the following questions as you respond to God:
    • What do I want to communicate to God?
    • What am I longing for in my relationship with God?
    • What do I desire in my prayer life?
    • What secrets of my heart are ready to expressed? Is there joy? grief? fear? gratitude?
Experess your intimate self to God in a personal way.
  4. Contemplatio (con-tem-plot-see-oh) "Contemplation"
Simply rest in the presence of God. Enjoy being surrounded by God's love.
  5. Actio (ax-ee-oh) "Action"
    Ask yourself the following questions:
    • How is God challenging me?
    • Is there a good thing that God is calling me to do?
    • Is there a harmful thing that God wants me to stop doing?
    • What is the next step I need to take?
Decide on an action and follow through with it.
